‘Green Man’ Turn of the Century Solid English Oak Bureau

Wonderful, solid English oak, turn of the century bureau.  Incredibly ornately carved with the famous ‘Green Man’ design.  The Green Man has historically been associated with the earth and nature so was extensively used in furniture making as a design.   The middle dividers are missing but we have not replaced them as we wanted to maintain the historical integrity of the bureau.   The locks of the fall (flap) and the cupboard door do work but the drawer locks no longer work as you would expect from a piece of this age although the key is still with the bureau, but it has been lovingly restored and all parts of the bureau work perfectly.

This design is sometimes called ‘Kitty Oak’ as the Green Man was often mistaken for a lion.
